It’s about an engineer designing a new waste management solution; a chemist developing new materials; a teacher educating the next generation; a policy maker working towards legislation; an artist telling the story better. We all need to find our role and working together.

✨ Ambassador Superpower Stories Update ✨

We love nothing more than seeing the amazing impact our ambassadors are having across the world!

Over the next few weeks we are going to be sharing some of these stories - and we’re kicking it off with Kristine Berg.

Since joining her first voyage with us in the North Pacific in 2018, Kristine has gone on to have an incredible impact - not just in her career but in her personal life too!

As the Sustainability Manager at TOMRA, Kristine works with them to transform how we all obtain, use, and reuse the planet’s resources. With so many great minds joining forces, TOMRA is leading the way to create a world without waste, setting a prime example for other leaders in the industry.

Kristine is also responsible for leading their global cleanup events every year. Last year, TOMRA colleagues picked up more than 75,000 litter pieces globally!

Outside of her role, Kristine has of course done a lot more sailing - including sailing competitively with an incredible all female team, sailing across the North Sea and she even sailed from the Norwegian coast all the way to the Lofoten Islands on a whale research and education mission.

In 2020 Kristine was also part of a ‘Trashion shoot’ for the annual national telethon, which as you can see from the pictures was a powerful way to both raise awareness and funds for WWF and their work on tackling plastic pollution!

And if all this wasn’t already amazing enough, when Kristine is at home she is also an active member of a regenerative & organic garden community in Oslo, which encourages individuals to learn to be more self-sustained and rely on local, seasonal resources, with reduced reliance on packaged foods.

It’s so inspiring to be able to share and celebrate these achievements within our community and see the many ripple effects still happening from your individual experiences!

The findings are in!

Last week our Maldives SHiFT Leadership Programme participants set out to conduct a 100 metre transect of their local areas. Logging what they found on the @debristracker as they went, noting it’s location and material, they were able to get a better idea of what items make up the waste in their area.

Needless to say that even though each survey area was only 100 metres, plastic was still found in abundance. Now the challenge is to figure out what we can all do about it!

With our final session still to come, participants are making individual action plans based on their unique superpowers to figure, to target the plastic pollution at the source in their community.

Excited to have the amazing @jennajambeck and her team at @universityofga with us for Maldives SHiFT!

Jenna was on board the inaugural eXXpedition Atlantic in 2014 and we have been collaborating with her, and using her Circularity Assessment Protocol (CAP), ever since. She heads up UGA's Circularity Informatics Lab, is a pioneer in assessing circular materials management, and has advised on waste management policy all over the world.

Jenna and her team will be working with our local partners to gather data and provide insights for decision makers to implement solutions to tackle plastic pollution.

Next week Kathryn Youngblood, from Jenna’s team, will be joining us on Instagram Live to discuss her role in the project and tell us a little more about CAP!

Introducing Maldives 🏝️

Maldives, a unique island nation, is made up of 1,190 coral islands spanning 510 miles across the Indian Ocean!

Though considered by many as a luxury holiday destination, the diversity of atolls across the country vary significantly. More than half of the population is considered rural, with only about 20 of the islands having more than 1,000 inhabitants. Male, is one of the exceptions, as a relatively large settlement in the country and is where we are initially going to be launching ‘Maldives SHiFT’.

Since the 1970s the economy of the Maldives, and tourism, has developed rapidly. Sadly however, without the sufficient waste management and infrastructure, there are overwhelming challenges - including plastic pollution.

Despite this, Maldives is a pioneering country that continuously overcomes different challenges and obstacles, which is one of the biggest reasons we are so excited to work alongside this nation! Our mission with this programme is to use the SHiFT framework to provide data to inform decision‐making, to develop leadership at a community level, and to bring together key stakeholders to ultimately reduce leakage of single‐use plastic into the environment and increase circular materials management.

Great to see our founder, @missemilypenn, joining @kielerwochesailing in Schilksee yesterday for a beach clean!

In only 45 minutes they collected a shocking 830 pieces of trash - 120 of them were cigarette butts and more than 80 pieces of plastic fragments...

With still so much work to do in order to stop plastic washing up on our shorelines, these events are a fantastic way to spread awareness and give communities first hand experience of the plastic crisis!

Applications for our Maldives SHiFT Leadership Programme are now open!

Are you resident in Maldives and looking to take your leadership to tackle plastic pollution to the next level?

We are looking for a range of participants – from island councils to government representatives, fishermen to teachers - to join a 5 part virtual programme using online interactive tools (Mural and Zoom) to delve into the plastics problem, navigate solutions and leave with an action plan.

The workshops will take place on the 28th, & 29th July, and 4th, 5th & 25th August 2023. There will be no cost to join the programme if offered a place.

Here at eXXpedtion, we believe in addressing ocean plastic pollution at the source. By working from the starting point we can begin to prevent the problem at its origin on land rather than continually trying to manage the ever-growing crisis across our ocean. Some of these solutions start with education and spreading awareness of the impact our behaviour and decisions have on the environment, shifting our perspectives so we can create change at the source.
