One of our favourite things is seeing the ripple effect our ambassadors create after joining a voyage - especially when it leads to incredible collaborations!

Following last week’s Superpower Blog featuring @rissyclark, we’re diving deeper into how she’s bringing others onboard and making waves in citizen science!

A Voyage of Science & Discovery 🌊

Last September, @thefreerangecrew set sail from Ucluelet to San Francisco. Joining the crew was fellow eXXpedition ambassador @nikkeydawn, a talented photographer and storyteller, to help contribute to a range of citizen science projects, collecting vital data for ocean research. As Larissa shared in the blog, making science accessible and collaborating with ocean-centred organisations is a key mission of their voyage.

Here’s a glimpse into their impact:

🐋 Whale Report App – Logged whale sightings for @oceanwise’s Sighting Network, supporting conservation in BC & Washington. Once offshore, they continued to log their sighting of a Sei Whale to a local initiative!

🌱 Secchi Disk Study – Took their deepest Secchi reading yet, tracking climate change’s impact on phytoplankton - an eye-opening moment for the younger crew members!

🔬 Global Ocean Environment Survey – Although a lost O-ring hindered sampling this time, the crew has contributed 100+ data points to @goesfoundation’s plankton & microplastics research.

🔍 Observations – Provided windrow data for plastic pollution research at the University of Hawaii and logged sightings of ‘by-the-wind sailors’ (Velella) for Georgetown University.

🗺️ @seabed2030 Mapping – Installed a depth-tracking device to contribute to global seabed mapping, helping fill critical data gaps.

🚢 Ocean Voyages Institute Plastic Trackers – Carried macro plastic trackers for research in the North Pacific Gyre, supporting offshore ocean data collection.

This voyage was a powerful testament to collaboration & citizen science at sea, and we can’t wait to see what they take on next!

Meet Larissa Clark, a powerhouse of high-impact PR, media, and communication campaigns for mission-driven organisations through her company, This Chapter PR and Another World Adventures. With a colourful background in sustainable development and adventure travel, she has been a key player within eXXpedition since 2018. As our previous Head of Communications, she has helped to raise awareness, foster action, and build powerful partnerships to tackle environmental challenges on land.

Now onto her next big adventure, Larissa and her partner Duncan founded Free Range Ocean, a UK-registered not-for-profit to inspire positive ocean action, whilst sailing the ocean. We caught up with her to find out what she’s been up to!

Yesterday marked the 10th International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day to recognise and celebrate the incredible women leading the way in research, discovery, and innovation – especially in a field where they remain underrepresented.

At eXXpedition, we are committed to breaking down barriers in science, sailing, and exploration by equipping women with the knowledge, skills, and networks to drive meaningful change. Through our work and community, we’re empowering women to step into leadership roles and inspire the next generation.

From marine biologists to artists or oceanographers to school teachers, we are proud to work alongside an extraordinary network of women dedicated to tackling plastic pollution and protecting our planet. Today, and every day, we celebrate their passion, perseverance, and impact.

Another incredible year at @bootduesseldorf!

This event was an amazing opportunity to continue working alongside the boating community, to explore our roles in ocean conservation and take action!

The week was packed with inspiring talks, hands-on activities, and an incredible network of passionate individuals all working towards a healthier ocean. A major highlight was seeing the yachting industry driving Blue Innovation forward - but there’s still plenty of work to be done! 💪

It was also fantastic to reconnect with fellow ocean movers and shakers: @deecaffari, @borisherrmannracing, @innovation_yachts, @team_malizia, @deutschemeeresstiftung, @kielerwochesailing, @dierecke, and @zeroemissions.eu

Dear eXXpedition Community,

It is with great sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend and ambassador, Anne Baker. Anne tragically lost her life a few weeks ago, in a skiing accident in the Alps, while embracing the adventurous spirit that so beautifully defined her.

Anne was a cherished crew member on our very first eXXpedition voyage across the Atlantic in 2014 and a key force behind the success of our Round Britain voyage in 2017. A seasoned sailor, she served as second mate and watch leader, bringing an infectious positivity and a steadfast “can-do” attitude that inspired everyone around her. Her contribution to those voyages was immeasurable, as were the lasting friendships she nurtured within our community.

Beyond her involvement with eXXpedition, Anne was a passionate advocate for ocean health and the fight against plastic pollution. She actively supported the Sea Rangers and countless other initiatives close to her heart. Her commitment to protecting our planet will continue to inspire us all.

Anne’s adventurous spirit, kindness, and determination left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. While her loss is deeply felt, her legacy will live on in the work we do and the memories we hold.

Thank you to Anne’s friends in our community who have shared their memories of Anne included in the post, it is clear that she will be greatly missed.

Meet Jess, who joined eXXpedition Ascension in 2015 sailing across the Atlantic from Senegal to Brazil onboard 72ft Sea Dragon. Every day they sampled and analysed microplastics in the ocean’s surface water which had a profound impact on Jess.

The experience of the voyage was the first step in Jess’ journey moving from an accomplished project manager in the major events industry to sustainability consultant. Born in the UK, her career in events gave her the opportunity to travel the world delivering large scale international events. Now settled in France, we caught up with her to see where her love of adventure, voyage experience and new perspective led her and what she has been up to since!
