For this leg of the virtual voyage, 9 women are joining us from us from across the globe, hailing from Argentina, UK, USA, Germany, France and Switzerland, to learn more about the plastics issue alongside eXXpedition mission leader Sally (@planetearthrowl).

In October 2019, we embarked on a pioneering sailing voyage and research mission to circumnavigate the globe. The mission set out to sail 30 voyages and 300 multidisciplinary women 38,000 nautical miles through some of the densest plastic accumulation zones, to tackle the devastating environmental and health impacts of single-use plastic and toxics in the world’s ocean.⁠

"From afar, the San Blas islands looked like a sce "From afar, the San Blas islands looked like a scene out of the film Blue Lagoon but as we set foot in a remote uninhabited island of Cayos Holandeses, the scene was completely different. It looked more like a landfill than a beach – layers and layers of waste: from drink bottles to shoes, Styrofoam cups, single-use cutlery, toothbrushes, deodorant containers, hair combs, ear swaps, soda cans, chemical product cans and even light bulbs."⁠

From teacher to earth scientist to environmental scientist to entrepreneur, each of the multidisciplinary women on our Virtual Voyage crew has brought their own, unique “superpower” and area of expertise to our voyage.

Our virtual voyage crew picked up 971 pieces of li Our virtual voyage crew picked up 971 pieces of litter during their marine debris survey! From cigarette butts to plastic fibres, the leg 4 crew logged the litter that they found into @UniGA’s Marine Debris Tracker App.⁠

Here are they key results:⁠

The USA-based crew recorded the highest number of tobacco products and Brazil the highest volume of food plastic⁠
Cigarettes and hard plastic fragments were the most commonly found⁠
68 plastic bottles, 39 food wrappers, 18 bottle lids, 14 straws and 10 grocery bags were amongst the litter found⁠

Over the past few days, our virtual voyage crew ha Over the past few days, our virtual voyage crew have been carrying out their local litter survey! From Australia to Japan to Sweden, the crew picked up litter across the world, with their data contributing to a global litter survey.
