The third Leg of our eXXpedition Round the World was a short yet jam-packed voyage exploring the Caribbean Sea around Antigua via Green Island.  The crew didn’t waste any time on land and set sail on the same day they arrived onboard S.V. TravelEdge, led by mission leader Sally Earthrowl.

While our previous two voyages crossed through the middle of the ocean, hundreds of miles away from land, the focus of this journey was to conduct research around the coastal areas, collecting numerous sediment samples to send back to the lab at the University of Plymouth for analysis.

Upon arrival at Green Island, the multidisciplinary women conducted a beach clean up and survey, filling over 6 large bags to the brim with items ranging from fishing lines to plastic containers with teeth marks, to tires and laundry baskets – a contrast to the paradise they were in, which inspired our crew members to write a blog with tips on minimising your impact when you travel.

While they were on land, our crew worked with local community leaders, schools and media. Mission leaders Sally Earthrowl and Winnie Courtene-Jones met with the Governor of Antigua, his Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Lady Williams and Brent Scotland to discuss eXXpedition’s mission, the challenges Antigua faces, and the work they are doing towards reducing their plastic footprint.

After their four day voyage, the guest crew went to Cobbs Cross Primary School to share their firsthand experience and speak about about microplastics, girls in adventure sailing and science as well as the number of possible solutions! After asking amazing questions about how plastics break down and how we can protect both the oceans and the trees, the entire class was singing by the end of the session.

Our story was broadcasted across the region, including a live interview with Sally Earthrowl on ZDK Liberty Radio 97.1, broadcasted on Facebook and a feature on eXXpedition Round the World on ABS TV/Radio.

…the next voyage leg of our journey begins today, as 10 new amazing women come onboard to set sail from Antigua to Aruba via Bonaire with Red Ensign Group.
Navarino technology keeps eXXpedition online wherever we go.
