Meet Sarah Richardson… a month ago Sarah had no idea that by the end of this year she would be setting sail with 13 other women on an adventure of self discovery and a scientific mission to boot. But those that know Sarah wouldn’t be surprised by this intention, for this girl lives for opportunity and expansion.
Sarah has had more chances than most to fall in love with the ocean. Growing up in British Columbia, Canada, Sarah spent her summers roaming the beaches and falling in love with the natural splendour of this undisturbed ecosystem.
With such beautiful biodiversity all around her growing up, it’s no surprise that Sarah has chosen to settle on the breathtaking Quadra Island, part of the Discovery Islands off the coast of Vancouver Island.
Another type A personality go-getter like her Amazon crew mate Lisa, Sarah goes by the title of ‘Jane-of-all-trades; raising her two daughters, 6 and 8, part-time homeschooler, sitting on multiple community boards, driving tractor trailers and answering phones for the family business.
Spoilt for choice of outdoor adventures, Sarah finds her fun as a Triathlete, and says she prefers open water swimming because it is so liberating, and there is always so much to see happening under the water.
We’re thrilled that Sarah was able to jump at the opportunity of joining Amazon 2015 and I caught up with our latest crew member to ask some more probing questions, to find out what makes Sarah such an inspiring wave maker.
Q: What colour is your toothbrush?
A: White and Blue
Q: If you could teleport where would you go and why?
A: If I could teleport I would go somewhere new everyday! First maybe the milky way, then every single natural wonder in every corner of the world. I might try to teleport my best friend with me, because exploration loves company.
Q: What’s your top tip for reducing plastic use – what works for you?
A: I avoid buying single serving food items. I like to buy in bulk and reuse my portable containers. Voting with my dollars.
Q: If you could put just one thing at the top of your bucket list, what would it be?
A: I can’t pick one experience above all others. I am an opportunities girl. I have an endless list of things that I think “that would be awesome”, then I live my life to take opportunities as they come. Take eXXpedition for example, if you asked me a month ago if an experience like this was in my future, I would have laughed and replied “Someday I hope”!
Q: What’s the most delightful word you can think of?
A: Delightful
Q: What’s your biggest fear?
A: Not having enough time to fully explore all facets of myself
Q: Favourite flavour ice-cream?
A: Gelato; all types!
Q: Who would be your 4 ultimate dinner party guests (dead or alive)?
A: Rick Mercer, Maggie Smith (as Violet Crawley), Micheal Pollan, and a friend or two.
Q: Where would you go if you were invisible?
A: Ancient Ceremonies
Q: What have you done that you are most proud of?
A: My two incredible, adventurous daughters. Of all the many things I am proud of, I am proud of them the most
Q: What would your Superhero power be?
A: The ability to use Orsen Scott Card’s ansible communication network
Q: What piece of advice have you been given that was most rewarding?
A: Thoughts become things, choose good ones. ~Robyn Discothistle
Q: What’s the most important thing you want to take away from your eXXpedition voyage?
A: Life long memories and inspiration
Q: What’s your favourite marine animal and why?
A: Jelly fish, they have existed since the beginning of time, they clean the ocean waters, and they seem so peaceful floating suspended in water
Q: What’s the one thing that drives you crazy?
A: Rigid mindsets
Thanks Sarah! Wow life on Quadra Island sure does sound like a LOT of fun, but i’m super excited you’ve chosen to leave just for a little while and join us at sea! Welcome to the eXXpedtion family!
