Where does all the plastic in the ocean come from, Where does all the plastic in the ocean come from, and what are the solutions to tackle this problem? 🌊

80% of it starts on land, so there’s no single fix for this problem. That’s why eXXpedition’s Science Programme is setting out to deliver the first global study tracing ocean plastic pollution back to where it really comes from! 🔍

Swipe through to see our why and how, then get into the nitty gritty of our methodology. From litter transects and store surveys, to sieving microplastics and analysing polymer types with an FTIR from PerkinElmer (@perkinelmer), our crews are gathering data across three areas - microplastics in water, litter on land and along coasts, and products and waste management in communities.

By looking closely at polymer types across land and sea, we can trace ocean plastic fragments back to the products they came from, helping drive solutions that are tailored to each place, not one-size-fits-all ♻️

Our programme follows the Circularity Assessment Protocol, developed by the Circularity Informatics Lab at the University of Georgia (@universityofga).

We’re excited to be setting sail again for our f We’re excited to be setting sail again for our fourth expedition of the year. This time, we’re heading to the Arctic, exploring the spectacular west coast of Greenland! ❄️⛵

We’ll journey from the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord in Disko Bay to Sisimiut and on to Nuuk, combining hands-on scientific research with connecting with local communities along the way.

As we sail through ice filled fjords beneath the midnight sun, we’ll collect water samples to investigate microplastic pollution in one of the world’s most remote ocean environments. While this landscape appears untouched, our research helps reveal how plastic has travelled even to the Arctic - bringing us one step closer to understanding the global plastic crisis 🌊

To find our more about our voyage, please see our press release on our website via the link in bio.

What does eXXpedition South Pacific look like in n What does eXXpedition South Pacific look like in numbers? 🌊

From Auckland to Vava’u, our crews travelled thousands of nautical miles, collected vital scientific data, documented plastic pollution across remote coastlines, and helped amplify the conversation through global media coverage.

The numbers tell a powerful story 💙

Watch to discover what was achieved across the last three legs of our expedition voyage and the collective impact of everyone involved.

This data is just the beginning – it will be used to inform the first global study mapping ocean plastic pollution back to its sources on land.

Thank you to our partners for making this mission possible, and all of the crew members who were onboard to sail, collect and analyse data, and join us in making the unseen seen.

171 trillion plastic particles are estimated to be 171 trillion plastic particles are estimated to be floating in our ocean today. That’s not a distant statistic - it’s in the water we sail, swim, and start our mornings by.

We’re on a mission to understand it, expose it and work on the solutions to address this crisis at the source.

Today marks the first day of Plastic Free July.

Everyone can play a role in reducing plastic consumption in their everyday lives, in the businesses they work with, and in advocating for policy changes in their corners of the globe.

It can start with just using a reusable coffee mug every morning!

Meet Rowan (@ocean_row), the Mission Leader from o Meet Rowan (@ocean_row), the Mission Leader from our South Pacific expeditions.

Leading our voyages from New Zealand to Tonga wasn't her first encounter with eXXpedition – she first sailed with us in 2018 across the North Pacific researching the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

A marine scientist working across blue carbon, plastics, and nature restoration, Rowan has spent years mapping and protecting seagrass and saltmarsh habitats, championing some of the first single-use plastics laws in the British Isles, and bridging science with community action.

"When I first came across eXXpedition I thought, 'that's exactly what I want to do.' I wanted an adventure, to really go out into the middle of the ocean, and work for lots different institutions, collecting data and making those connections.

It’s hard to remember how I felt beforehand, but the experience definitely solidified for me that the problems are on land. As a marine scientist, your passions are around the oceans, but a lot of these issues are social issues. The ocean part is the nice bit, but actually I realised it’s all about trying to change people’s behaviour."

We're so grateful to have had Rowan back onboard over the past few months – so please join us in showing her huge appreciation for her leadership and commitment to protecting the oceans!

What an adventure 💙 Our third eXXpedition has What an adventure 💙

Our third eXXpedition has come to an end after sailing through the Kingdom of Tonga from Tongatapu to Ha’apai and Vava’u onboard SV Wind Shift! 🏝️ 🌊

From masterclasses on the boat to surveying remote coastlines, our crew’s research at sea and on land offered an opportunity for learning and reflection as well as a chance to witness first hand the beauty and resilience of this incredible island nation.

Alongside the research came moments of connection, curiosity and joy - spotting dolphins, swimming in crystal clear waters, sharing stories at sea, and forming friendships that will last long after we’ve returned to shore.

To our crew, partners and everyone who followed along, thank you for being part of the journey.

Until the next eXXpedition... coming in July! ⛵️
