🚨 New research has detected microplastics in hu 🚨 New research has detected microplastics in human ovarian follicular fluid for the first time.

This peer-reviewed study published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety is a stark reminder of why our mission at eXXpedition matters more than ever. Scientists found microplastics in 14 out of 18 women undergoing fertility treatment - in the very fluid that supports developing eggs.
⁣
Why does this matter? Because follicular fluid plays a crucial role in reproduction and its contamination of microplastics - and the toxic chemicals they carry - could be linked to hormonal disruption, reduced fertility, and other reproductive health issues.⁣ Plastic particles have now been found in semen, urine, placenta, breast milk, and the brain

🧬 From the ocean to our own bodies, plastic is everywhere. This isn’t just an environmental issue - it’s personal, it’s urgent, and it affects all of us.

⁣At eXXpedition, we’ve seen plastic pollution firsthand in the wildest of places, from the Arctic to the South Pacific. Now, we’re seeing it in ourselves. Our call is louder than ever: we must shift our systems, rethink how we use plastic, and empower women to lead the charge.⁣

Our health is deeply connected to the health of our environment. This is another urgent reminder that plastic pollution isn’t just out there — it’s in here too..

Let’s talk about the SHiFT Method! The method i Let’s talk about the SHiFT Method!

The method is a journey of discovery to understand the crux of a problem and weigh up where we have the biggest opportunity to make an impact.

There is no silver bullet to solve the plastic pollution crisis, we need to tackle it from all angles. The SHiFT Method gives you the opportunity to identify an area of your life where you want to make a shift, helps you navigate the different solutions out there, whilst weighing up the pros and cons at the same time.

It runs through all our programmes - at sea, on land and online - and even the SHiFT Platform www.shift.how. We hope these tools empower you to make informed and impactful changes! From simple consumer choices to more complex industry actions, the method aims to address the worldwide issue of plastic pollution and create long-term change from sea-to-source.

Meet Katrina McQuail, an inspiring organic farmer from Ontario, Canada, and one of our early ambassadors! Katrina joined us on a transformative voyage to the Amazon in 2015, and since then, she’s been cultivating change in the agriculture world. At @meetingplaceorganicfarm, Katrina combines her passions for community, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, finding creative and impactful ways to weave these values into her farming practices.

We caught up with Katrina to hear about her journey, how the Amazon voyage shaped her perspective, and her exciting plans for the future of sustainable farming.

Embrace the Power of Positivity! In our journey t Embrace the Power of Positivity!

In our journey towards a more sustainable and plastic-free future, we’ve learnt that the company we keep plays a pivotal role. Surrounding yourself with positive people can be a game-changer for making an impact and protecting the environment.

Here’s what we’ve learnt along the way:

1️⃣ Momentum is Contagious: When you’re surrounded by like-minded, positive people, their energy becomes contagious. Whether you’re reducing plastic use, adopting a plant-based diet, or practicing energy conservation, the shared enthusiasm creates a powerful momentum for change.

2️⃣ Inspiration Amplified: Positive people inspire and uplift. Sharing success stories, eco-friendly tips and solutions, and small victories not only motivates you but also fuels the collective passion for environmental protection. Together, we can turn inspiration into action!

3️⃣ Overcoming Challenges Together: Finding ways to reduce our plastic footprint may have its challenges, but facing them becomes easier with a supportive community. From navigating alternatives to overcoming setbacks, having a positive support system makes the journey more enjoyable and manageable.

4️⃣ Celebrating Progress: Every small effort counts, and celebrating these wins is essential. Positive companions will acknowledge and celebrate your eco-friendly choices, reinforcing the belief that collective actions - no matter how small - contribute to significant positive change.

5️⃣ Strength in Unity: Environmental protection requires a united front. By surrounding yourself with positive and supportive individuals, you become part of a community committed to creating a healthier planet. Together, we can influence broader change and amplify our impact.

Let’s build a community that empowers, uplifts, and inspires each other to be the change we wish to see in the world. Tag your friends and share the positivity!

✨ Ambassador Spotlight ✨ One of our favourite ✨ Ambassador Spotlight ✨

One of our favourite things is seeing the ripple effect our ambassadors create after joining a voyage - especially when it leads to incredible collaborations!

Following last week’s Superpower Blog featuring @rissyclark, we’re diving deeper into how she’s bringing others onboard and making waves in citizen science!

A Voyage of Science & Discovery 🌊

Last September, @thefreerangecrew set sail from Ucluelet to San Francisco. Joining the crew was fellow eXXpedition ambassador @nikkeydawn, a talented photographer and storyteller, to help contribute to a range of citizen science projects, collecting vital data for ocean research. As Larissa shared in the blog, making science accessible and collaborating with ocean-centred organisations is a key mission of their voyage.

Here’s a glimpse into their impact:

🐋 Whale Report App – Logged whale sightings for @oceanwise’s Sighting Network, supporting conservation in BC & Washington. Once offshore, they continued to log their sighting of a Sei Whale to a local initiative!

🌱 Secchi Disk Study – Took their deepest Secchi reading yet, tracking climate change’s impact on phytoplankton - an eye-opening moment for the younger crew members!

🔬 Global Ocean Environment Survey – Although a lost O-ring hindered sampling this time, the crew has contributed 100+ data points to @goesfoundation’s plankton & microplastics research.

🔍 Observations – Provided windrow data for plastic pollution research at the University of Hawaii and logged sightings of ‘by-the-wind sailors’ (Velella) for Georgetown University.

🗺️ @seabed2030 Mapping – Installed a depth-tracking device to contribute to global seabed mapping, helping fill critical data gaps.

🚢 Ocean Voyages Institute Plastic Trackers – Carried macro plastic trackers for research in the North Pacific Gyre, supporting offshore ocean data collection.

This voyage was a powerful testament to collaboration & citizen science at sea, and we can’t wait to see what they take on next!
